FAQS
Shipping Information
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship internationally.
Why are some boards available for immediate shipping and others take more time?
We have boards on the floor ready to ship anywhere in the world, and anything else is a custom order. Traditionally, we estimate 3-4 weeks, however, this can be extended to 6-8 weeks depending on the complexity of the spray or if it is an epoxy lamination, which takes an extra week.
How do I know when my board has been shipped, and how do I track the delivery?
If you choose certain providers, they will offer a tracking system for your shipment. For others, please reach out to Nev directly, and he will assist you in tracking your board, as he is a local contact. Contact us here.
How can I track my custom board's progress?
To track the progress of your custom board, simply contact Nev directly. He will provide you with updates on where your board is in the manufacturing process.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping costs can vary based on your location and the size of the board. For specific shipping rates, please reach out to our support team or check the shipping information on our website.
How do I know my board has been shipped?
Once your board has been shipped, you will receive an automatic email notification confirming the shipment. This will include tracking details to monitor its progress.
Board Warranties and Returns
What happens if my board is damaged in freight?
We can typically make a claim for surfboard damage caused by a third party, thanks to the freight company insurance coverage. Our packaging system reduces that scenario dramatically from small knocks, dings or damages.
My board has arrived damaged, who do I speak to?
Please contact us directly for assistance with damaged boards.
What is the warranty policy?
We accept board exchanges for size changes at our discretion, provided the board is in perfect condition and accompanied by proof of purchase. The customer is responsible for returning the board, and original shipping costs will be considered in the return decision. If you have further questions about your return, feel free to contact our team.
If you’re not satisfied with the performance of your board, please give us a call. We’ll work with you to find a solution. If necessary, you can return the board, and we’ll offer you a discount on your next purchase or help you find an alternative that suits your needs.
What is the warranty policy for accessories?
Our warranty for accessories, including fins, leg ropes, pads, and covers, only covers faults and damages directly attributed to manufacturing defects. Please note that determinations of manufacturing defects will be made by our team, not by customers. Under Australian Consumer Law, the right to repair, exchange, or refund a defective product rests with Nev Customs, not the customer.
Exclusions may apply for misuse, damage resulting from the inherent nature of the sport, and normal wear and tear. The warranty period is three months from the date of receipt.
What if the board I want is out of stock?
If the board you want is out of stock, we can either process a custom order for you or place a new stock order to replenish that board. You’ll be alerted to the fact that it's not in stock, and we will make more. There’s no obligation for you to purchase the new stock board, but feel free to check back in three to four weeks for availability, or you can proceed with a custom order if you prefer.
Can I change my order if I change my mind?
You can change your order as long as manufacturing hasn’t started. If it’s a custom order that has already been signed with your name, unfortunately, it cannot be changed. However, if it’s a standard order that hasn’t been started, just let us know, and we’ll be happy to accommodate the change.
If manufacturing has begun but the board hasn’t been personalised, we can typically create a new board for you. This situation is rare, but we’ll work with you to ensure you get what you want. To confirm the status of your order, please contact Nev directly.
Custom Board Enquiries
Does my new surfboard come with fins?
No, it does not. Firewire stopped supplying surfboards with fins about ten years ago, as many customers were discarding the standard plastic fins that came with their boards. This was not only a waste but also added unnecessary costs, both financially and environmentally.
With the introduction of high-performance fins from companies like Futures and FCS, you may access a wide range of fin options tailored to your preferences. Providing a basic set of fins with every board no longer made sense, as many surfers prefer to choose their own, ensuring they get the best performance possible.
When you place a custom order with Nev, he will advise you on which fins and accessories to select for your board.
How does the volume calculator work?
The volume calculator is part of the Shape 3D computer design program used for surfboards. It uses algorithms to calculate the volume of the board accurately. Volume refers to the amount of space a board occupies; for example, if a board has a volume of 35 litres, it means that if you filled it with water, it would hold exactly 35 litres.
The calculator considers the board's length, width, and thickness to determine its volume accurately. This precise measurement helps surfers select boards that suit their weight and skill level, leading to better performance in the water.
Determining the right volume is essential for proper buoyancy and paddling ease. While volume is a critical factor, it's also important to consult with your shaper for customisation based on your individual needs, as different board styles will affect performance even with the same volume.
How do I know which volume is right for me?
To determine the right volume for your board, start by identifying the board you surf most often and love the most. Check the volume listed on the bottom of the board, near the dimensions; for example, it might say 30.2 litres.
If you have a board from another manufacturer, you can often find its volume on their website. Knowing the volume that works well for you is essential, as this information allows a shaper like Nev to help you create an even better board tailored to your needs.
What’s the difference between PU, epoxy stringered blank, and epoxy/carbon strip construction?
The main difference is in the materials and construction methods used.
PU (Polyurethane) Epoxy Stringer Blanks:
PU boards are made from polyurethane foam with a polyester resin. This traditional method has been used for over 60 years and includes a stringer, which adds stiffness and strength. Some modern variations may include stringerless designs, where the board is machined with grooves to enhance flex without a traditional stringer.
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) Epoxy and Carbon Strip Construction:
EPS boards use expanded polystyrene foam and require epoxy resin for lamination because polyurethane resin can damage the foam. When someone requests an epoxy board, they are usually looking for an EPS blank with an epoxy lamination.
In terms of construction, you can choose between:
- EPS with a Stringer: This offers traditional stiffness and performance underfoot.
- EPS with a Carbon Strip: This option allows for more flex, providing a different feel and performance on the water.
The choice between a stringer or a carbon strip often comes down to personal preference and the type of feel a surfer wants under their feet. Many professional surfers still prefer stringers for their feedback and tension, while others opt for the flexibility of carbon strips.
What does a carbon strip do for my board?
A carbon strip enhances a surfboard's flexibility and performance by allowing for better torsional flex. Unlike a traditional stringer, which limits movement, the carbon strip lets the board twist during turns. This improves responsiveness and helps maintain stability while providing some tension underfoot. To summarise, a carbon strip gives the board a lively feel, making it more agile and responsive in the water.
Can I choose from a range of different NEV logos for my board?
Each board model comes with preset logos specific to that design. However, we understand that you may want to customise your board further. If you wish to change the logos, there may be a small fee, approximately $25 per side, to cover the additional work involved in altering the design.
Please note that while we’re happy to accommodate logo changes, this may affect the overall layout and design integrity of the board. For specific requests, it’s best to contact us directly so we can discuss your options.
Why can't I keep the layout of the logos I originally ordered?
There are specific guidelines for logo placement to ensure the board maintains its aesthetic and functional integrity. Our experience allows us to know the best positions for logos to avoid issues, like having them placed upside down, which can detract from the board’s appearance.
Unlike many manufacturers that offer limited logo options, our boards feature a wide variety of logos, making the layout process more complex and time-consuming for our team. This attention to detail is what sets our boards apart.
If you have specific requests, we encourage you to reach out. While we do offer some flexibility, significant changes to the layout may not be feasible due to production constraints.
What is the difference between a spray and a printed artwork design?
Airbrush/Spray Designs:
The term "airbrush" often refers to detailed graphics applied using a spray technique, but it’s more accurate to categorise this work as "spray" designs.
Painted Artwork Designs:
In contrast, painted artwork typically refers to designs created with brushes rather than sprays. This method allows for greater detail, texture, and personalisation. Painted designs can feature intricate images, illustrations, or custom artwork that enhances the board's aesthetic. The flexibility of paint offers artists the ability to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs that stand out.
What is the difference between a simple, complicated, and very complex spray?
Spray designs can vary in complexity:
- Simple Spray: This involves a single solid colour covering the entire board or perhaps two distinct colours applied to different sections, such as the bottom and rails. It provides a clean, straightforward look.
- Complicated Spray: This type incorporates multiple colours and intricate elements, such as thin lines or patterns created with tape. The complexity here allows for more visual interest and depth.
- Very Complex Spray: This includes highly detailed designs featuring various colours and patterns, showcasing advanced techniques and artistic flair. These designs can be quite elaborate, making the board a true work of art.
What is an Inlayz?
Inlayz are a unique way to incorporate intricate designs onto surfboards without the labour costs associated with traditional spray art. They involve the use of digitised artwork derived from iconic spray designs, such as the Manga spray or the Sunny Garcia spray, which have been archived by Nev.
The process involves printing these designs onto a lightweight, specially designed fabric that resembles fibreglass. This fabric is then laminated into the deck or bottom of the board. Inlayz provide a much less expensive option compared to hand-sprayed designs, while the lamination process not only protects the artwork but also adds strength to the board without significantly increasing its weight.
