The main difference is in the materials and construction methods used.
PU (Polyurethane) Epoxy Stringer Blanks:
PU boards are made from polyurethane foam with a polyester resin. This traditional method has been used for over 60 years and includes a stringer, which adds stiffness and strength. Some modern variations may include stringerless designs, where the board is machined with grooves to enhance flex without a traditional stringer.
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) Epoxy and Carbon Strip Construction:
EPS boards use expanded polystyrene foam and require epoxy resin for lamination because polyurethane resin can damage the foam. When someone requests an epoxy board, they are usually looking for an EPS blank with an epoxy lamination.
In terms of construction, you can choose between:
- EPS with a Stringer: This offers traditional stiffness and performance underfoot.
- EPS with a Carbon Strip: This option allows for more flex, providing a different feel and performance on the water.
The choice between a stringer or a carbon strip often comes down to personal preference and the type of feel a surfer wants under their feet. Many professional surfers still prefer stringers for their feedback and tension, while others opt for the flexibility of carbon strips.
A carbon strip enhances a surfboard's flexibility and performance by allowing for better torsional flex. Unlike a traditional stringer, which limits movement, the carbon strip lets the board twist during turns. This improves responsiveness and helps maintain stability while providing some tension underfoot. To summarise, a carbon strip gives the board a lively feel, making it more agile and responsive in the water.
Airbrush/Spray Designs:
The term "airbrush" often refers to detailed graphics applied using a spray technique, but it’s more accurate to categorise this work as "spray" designs.
Painted Artwork Designs:
In contrast, painted artwork typically refers to designs created with brushes rather than sprays. This method allows for greater detail, texture, and personalisation. Painted designs can feature intricate images, illustrations, or custom artwork that enhances the board's aesthetic. The flexibility of paint offers artists the ability to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs that stand out.
Spray designs can vary in complexity:
- Simple Spray: This involves a single solid colour covering the entire board or perhaps two distinct colours applied to different sections, such as the bottom and rails. It provides a clean, straightforward look.
- Complicated Spray: This type incorporates multiple colours and intricate elements, such as thin lines or patterns created with tape. The complexity here allows for more visual interest and depth.
- Very Complex Spray: This includes highly detailed designs featuring various colours and patterns, showcasing advanced techniques and artistic flair. These designs can be quite elaborate, making the board a true work of art.
